GIRLS EDUCATIONAL AND MENTORING SERVICES (GEMS), UNITED STATES
Shelia White is a survivor of sex trafficking. After enduring a troubled childhood, Sheila was lured from the foster care system into prostitution by a man who soon became her pimp. Trafficked for years on the streets on New York City, she was eventually able to leave her trafficker with the help of Girls Educational & Mentoring Services (GEMS).
Sheila now works with GEMS as a Survivor Leadership Coordinator where she is able to help sex trafficking survivors like her escape and rebuild their lives. Along with GEMS Founder, Rachel Lloyd, Sheila recently helped write and illustrate The Survivor's Guide to Leaving, a groundbreaking book designed to support survivors of commercial sexual exploitation and trafficking.
